Let me start off by saying stop trying to reinvent the wheel. Too many of us waste time wracking our brain to come up with “the next hottest thing”. Being new doesn’t necessarily mean being good.

Instead of struggling to create a new idea, build on existing ideas. Look at your target industry and find ways to make it better. Find ways that you can make it more valuable.  When I ran my design business, there was nothing “special” about me being a web designer. What made me valuable was teaching my clients how to use their website to make more money. Now, as someone who runs a blog on business and branding, I stand out by providing worksheets and/or videos.

At the end of the day, you want to create an experience for your audience. Let’s look at Uber for example. Taxis have been around since 1897. EIGHTEEN NINETY-SEVEN. The wheel was invented, but Uber just polished it. Uber creates an experience where you can essentially get “chauffeur” in style by using an app. The only thing Uber had to focus on was looking good and being easily accessible. The original model of being a taxi driver was already created. The blueprint was laid out and they add their own personal touch.

When you want to stand out, find a blueprint that works and add your own authenticity to make it better. Apply the basics then put your energy into mastering what makes you valuable.
